Are you a Festival? Is this Georgia Shakespeare Festival?
We were originally founded in 1985 as Georgia Shakespeare Festival and every summer we produced a summer festival of plays under at tent. In 1997, we moved into our current home at the Conant Performing Arts Center and our season has since expanded into the fall. We also produce work in Piedmont Park and we send education programs throughout Georgia and into many surrounding states. This growth led to a departure from the name Festival as our identity even though the annual Summer Festival of three plays is the core of our production calendar. People sometimes refer to us as a Festival experience because we offer a furnished picnic area complete with pre-show entertainment.
The uniqueness of our Summer Festival is in the fact that we produce three plays in rotating repertory. As an example of this, you can see our actors perform a Shakespeare play on a Friday night, an American Classic the next night, and a Russian Classic on Sunday. Three plays on one stage in one weekend performed by the same core ensemble of artists. It’s a real treat.

Is this similar to the Renaissance Festival?
No. It’s easy to equate Shakespeare and The Renaissance, and some people mistake the name Georgia Renaissance Festival for us. We do have picnics and pre-show entertainers, but you will not encounter turkey legs and jousting.
top
Do you only produce Shakespeare?
No. While Shakespeare means our core artistic inspiration, we are equally excited by the works of enduring authors such as Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Moliere, and Anton Chekhov to name a few. Our focus is on compelling stories by enduring authors. To that end, you can expect to see a mixture of Shakespeare and other classics from around the world.
top
Do you set Shakespeare in a specific period of time?
No. We don’t follow any rigid rules about the right or wrong setting for a Shakespeare play. Our directors work to tell the clearest, most relevant story possible to a modern audience. Sometimes that will involve a modern setting and sometimes it will involve a historical approach. We fit the director’s vision to every production individually.

Are you a branch of Oglethorpe University?
No. We are thrilled to have a home on the campus of Oglethorpe University and to work as partners in raising the money and building the Conant Performing Arts Center. However, Oglethorpe University and Georgia Shakespeare are two totally separate entities. Occasionally, people think we are a student organization. In fact, the bulk of Georgia Shakespeare’s company consists of highly skilled professional artists, administrators, and craftspeople from throughout Atlanta and the nation.

Are you outdoors?
You may have heard about Georgia Shakespeare through out highly successful program, Shake At The Lake, which takes place each Spring in Piedmont Park. Or you may remember the days when Georgia Shakespeare performed on the lawn at Oglethorpe University under a tent. Either way, the Conant Performing Arts Center is a unique experience. It retains the charm of the old picnic days and of Piedmont Park by allowing patrons a furnished outdoor experience prior to each performance. The audience then moves indoors to our 500-seat state-of-the-art facility complete with comfortable theatre seats and climate control. It’s the best of both worlds.

Do you perform in a tent?
Once upon a time and not so long ago, Georgia Shakespeare did perform under a tent. We now have a state-of-the-art indoor theatre that was modeled after the look and feel of the old tent days. It even has retractable walls that can be raised to create an open-air environment. However these walls are not raised for productions. You will enjoy all of the comforts of a modern theatre and all of the fun of the old tent wrapped up in one.

How do I picnic? What can I bring?
Everyone is welcome to picnic and there is no extra charge or required reservation. We supply the scenery, the fun, and the furniture. We can even have your food waiting for you if you choose to order from our official caterer. Or you may choose to bring your own food. You may also bring the beverage(s) of your choice. Georgia Shakespeare serves soft drinks, bottled water, lemonade, and a wide variety of coffee drinks. We do not serve alcohol, but you are welcome to bring your own. Drinks are permitted inside the theatre if they are contained in something other than glass.

Where do I park?
Parking is free, secure, and convenient on the campus of Oglethorpe University. After driving past the secured guard gate on Peachtree Road, you may park anywhere on campus. The theatre is located straight back down the road from the main gate. There is parking to the right between the theatre and the Library as well as to the left by the Track and upwards toward the Baseball Field. Our turnaround is located by the box office and is a great drop off point for people and picnic supplies.

Are you the only Shakespeare theatre in Atlanta?
No. There is another theatre in downtown Atlanta that produces works by William Shakespeare on a regular basis. We are the second largest professional theatre in Georgia producing mainstage plays and education programs to more than 60,000 people annually. We are the group that produces Shake at the Lake in Piedmont Park. We are also the group that performs in the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. Our work is consistently selected by the local media as among the best Atlanta has to offer.
